To Get Started:
You should begin as early as possible by joining organizations that allow you to practice public speaking. You should get a college education in communications, journalism. or English writing. Also specialize in the spoken word and how it is used. Choose a field to work on (Business, politics, public relations) and study it to great detail. Become an expert in the current topics of your field. You should join a speechwriter group or association. Many break into the field by already being writers for purposes other than speeches. Your individual ideas will differentiate you from the competition. One good speech that moves the audience and gets results to your client will give you a great start in your business, since most if not all of your business will come from referrals and networking. Yours should be able to charge $60 to $80 per hour or a one time fee of $800 or more depending on your reputation and demand for your services.
Tips:
You should be able to work from home with this business and you should not require any assistance unless your business growths to the point staff is needed.
